A large structure fire was kept in check by the East Wayne Fire District and other area fire departments on Sunday.
East Wayne was dispatched for a fire alarm at Mars Horsecare Co., located at 330 E. Schultz St., at 10:37 a.m., according to Fire Chief Kyle Nussbaum. The fire broke out in the production area of the horse feed mill.
Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy black smoke in the middle of the building, and fire was starting to breach the roof and the eaves.
“Crews made an aggressive interior attack” to suppress the fire, Nussbaum said. At that time, mutual aid was called and the scene became a working structure fire.
Orrville Fire Department brought a ladder truck and provided “aerial recon” to give an assist from above the scene. The team on top was also ready if the roof gave way to the fire.
