A portion of the 1552 trail in the Umpqua National Forest has been closed while firefighters try to suppress a three-acre wildfire burning in the Boulder Creek Wilderness area near where a missing hiker was found Tuesday. The fire was detected last week after a citizen spotted a wisp of smoke, according to the Forest Service. Douglas Forest Protective Association cameras also picked up the blaze. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. When asked if the blaze was started by the missing woman to create a signal fire, Umpqua National Forest spokesperson Emily Veale said “We don’t want to make any assumptions at this point.” She said the hiker was near the area where the fire broke out, but added that there was also lightning during that same time.
