The Coos Bay Fire Department burned a home Saturday, located at 261 Norman Ave., in the Empire area, as part of a live training demonstration for its firefighters. Fire officials closed down the street between Lund and Stark avenues to allow firefighting equipment, trucks and personnel to set up safely around the home. The drill, which began around 9 a.m., was set in place to help teach and refresh fellow firefighters, volunteers and students how to react during a home fire. The exercises included engaging in water supply operations, participating in ventilation and exposure protection techniques and using exterior fire attack and rescue skills.
Battalion Chief Jeff Adkins of the Coos Bay Fire Department said the goal for today’s controlled burn was to get his staff and his two new hires the training needed to successfully put out a fire.
