The City of Grants Pass is looking at the possibility of creating an independent fire district. Historically, the fire district is co-operated under a temporary funding levy with the Public Safety Department. Finance Director Jay Meredith said voters have typically supported the temporary funding in the past, which goes up for renewal every three or four years. “Some of the things leading up to that were the pressures in our local criminal justice system,” Meredith said. “The city was having to supplement jail funding to be able to have jail services that met our city’s public safety department need.” But it’s a temporary funding source that’s meant to be an ongoing service.
