A West Salem woman is in critical condition following a house fire early Thursday. Crews were dispatched to a report of a house fire in the 100 block of Rosemont Avenue NW just before 1 a.m., according to Salem Fire Department. Firefighters carried the unconscious woman up a narrow stairwell from the basement of the residence, where the fire originated, according to deputy chief Gabriel Benmoussa. She was initially taken to Salem Hospital in critical condition and later transferred to Legacy Oregon Burn Center in Portland. Five or six other family members made it out of the home without injuries. One man was treated on scene for smoke inhalation. The family did not have working smoke detectors and were alerted to the fire by their dog. Crews were on scene for over two hours. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
