Oregon State Police responded to a single-vehicle accident just before 7 a.m., and it shut down I-5 northbound for almost an hour.
A commercial truck, for an unknown reason, drove directly into the impact barrier between the northbound lanes and exit 233 off-ramp. The truck skidded and rolled on to its side in the exit lane, scattering debris that completely blocked both the exit ramp and northbound lanes.
The driver, Steven Howard, 58, was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital with serious injuries. The freeway was opened about 45 minutes after the initial closure, but the exit ramp will be closed for several hours, Albany Firefighters Local 845 said.
A Hazmat crew responded to the scene for cleanup.
