Married couple dies in Umatilla house fire

The City of Umatilla Police say a married couple died in a house fire Sunday. Police say that the couple, Roger Frances, 67, and his wife Ruth Frances, 68, were found dead inside their home located at 125 John Day Street around 5 p.m. In a release sent out by the Police, the home took on minimal fire damage but did have significant heat and smoke damage. Police also added that the fire is believed to have been "no more than a tragic accident." Roger Frances worked for the City of Umatilla as the public works superintendent for 25 years, he retired in 2013. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Frances family," Police said. The Oregon State Fire Marshal, Umatilla County Fire District 1 and the Hermiston Police Department are assisting Umatilla police with the investigation that is underway.
