On Thursday, Interim Eugene Springfield Fire Chief Chris Hepple addressed the League of Women Voters Lane County about urban wildfire preparedness. Hepple points out many residents live in the urban interface, meaning their homes are susceptible to a wildfire. He says the fire department has plans in place, but there are many ways residents can help gear up for wildfire season by creating defensible space and making sure their address is visible to the fire department. “How are you prepared in terms of your home, is your roof swept; are your gutters cleared; are there screens on them to prevent what we call those fire brands that are brought in from the winds from fire that get on your roof and settle in and start on fire; do you have a family escape plan,” Hepple says.
