Volunteer firefighters on the south coast are stretching their fire fighting skills at a special training Monday night. Millington and Sumner Volunteer firefighting teams are taking their lessons from the textbook to the burn box. Mallory Heyer is a 1st-year student in the Southwestern Oregon Community College Fire Science Program, volunteering with Millington Fire. "I was really scared because I hadn't had this kind of experience before,” she said. She observed the flames, shaking and doing what they've nicknamed as the firefighter dance: a quick jostle so the equipment registers movement, as a safety measure. If a firefighter ever succumbed to the flames or an injury and stopped moving, a high pitched alarm would sound to alert comrades to their location.
