A residential structure fire claimed the life of a Roseburg woman on Friday morning. Officials have identified the victim as 83-year-old Darlene Louise Shaffer. Firefighters responded to a house on the 900 block of Oak Hill Road just north of the city at about 11:15 a.m. They found thick smoke and heavy fire coming from the house. Neighbors told responders that an elderly woman was possibly still in the house. Firefighters worked to extinguish the fire and a search was conducted. Firefighters found Shaffer inside the home dead. One other resident of the home was not there at the time of the fire. The house sustained heavy damage. The cause is under investigation. Douglas County Fire District No. 2 responded with 16 firefighters, three engines, two water tenders and two command vehicles.
