A fuel tanker crash closed down Highway 22 on Sunday, and cleanup efforts will keep a 20-mile stretch between Idanha and U.S. 20 closed through at least Friday or Saturday, ODOT officials said.
According to Oregon State Police, a fuel tanker overturned Sunday morning, closing the road eight miles east of Idanha all the way to Santiam Junction.
ODOT said crews are working to remove contaminated soil and repair the road. They said a 600-feet long area of the road will need to be excavated and rebuilt.
The Department of Environmental Quality estimates the tanker was carrying more than 10,000 gallons of fuel when it overturned. An unknown amount of fuel was released into the North Santiam River, which provides drinking water for the Salem area.
