Firefighters battling the Little Lava Fire, which has Sunriver and neighboring communities on a Level 2 "Be Set" evacuation alert, were aiming for a proactive day with cooler temperatures and rain Wednesday.
At the last official report, the fire was 2,500 acres. But that was Tuesday afternoon and there were other reports that it had grown significantly as of Wednesday morning.
Nathan Goodrich, Operations Section Chief for Pacific Northwest Team 3, said Wednesday that the Little Lava Fire pushed to the east and crossed the 45 Road Tuesday in the area of Kuamaski Butte. That's roughly 5.5 miles west of Sunriver as the crow flies.
The fire burned about 300 acres after crossing the 45 Road, Goodrich said. Night resources were successful in getting some dozer line around the slop and Goodrich said he was confident that day crews will be able to catch more of it.
