A child and six adults were displaced Monday afternoon when fire broke out in a bedroom of their New Florence home.
A New Florence firefighter suffered a minor hand injury in a fall while battling the blaze and was treated at the scene in the 100 block of 15th Street, according to New Florence Deputy Fire Chief Phil Ferris.
A pet perished in the home, but several others, mostly cats, were rescued, Ferris said.
One of the occupants reported the fire to 911 dispatchers at about 3:15 p.m. and all were out of the house when firefighters arrived, he said.
While flames were contained to the second-story bedroom, there was significant heat and water damage to the home, according to Ferris. The Red Cross was called to assist the family, and the Westmoreland County Animal Response Team was summoned to help with the pets.
