Two dogs were rescued from inside a burning home Monday in Windber. But the damage is temporarily leaving a family of four homeless, Windber’s assistant fire chief Anson Bloom said. The fire was reported shortly after 1 p.m. on the 400 block of Sixth Street, bringing Windber Fire and four nearby departments to the scene. Bloom said flames were visible inside the home’s first floor when initial crews arrived. Family members had already evacuated, but firefighters had to go into the residence to find their pets, he added. No injuries were reported although several neighbors were examined for smoke inhalation, Bloom said. He said the home remains structurally sound, but fire, water and heat damage will have to be addressed before it can be habitable again.
