A 58-year-old Lancaster man is charged with homicide by vehicle and several related counts in the May 25 crash death of a 38-year-old North Catasauqua firefighter, the Berks County District Attorney’s Office reports.
Miguel Mejia was driving a 2010 Mercedes-Benz SUV about 70 mph in a 45mph zone about 4 p.m. that day on Maidenceek Road in Maidencreek Township when the vehicle went airborne cresting a hill, the district attorney’s office said. Mejia lost control of the SUV, hit a 2006 Jeep Commander driven by Christopher Blackwell and a 2014 Harley Davidson motorcycle ridden by Erik Hirner, 38.
Hirner, who was the assistant chief for Charotin Hose Co. No. 1 in North Catasauqua as well as a career firefighter for the city of Reading, died two days later at Reading Hospital, authorities said.
