Larksville Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 has signed on to assist Plymouth Twp. with fire services after the township’s own department was abruptly shuttered Tuesday. The borough will join departments from the City of Nanticoke, Lake Silkworth and Plymouth Borough in providing fire protection now that Plymouth Twp. Fire Rescue Tilbury Station 169 has closed, said Gale Conrad, chairwoman of the township’s board of supervisors. “Time-wise and mileage-wise, it is quicker” than having one department for the entire township, she said. “It’s just unfortunate with our volunteer company that things had to happen.” Tilbury Station ceased operations Tuesday, with officials citing finances as the primary reason. The station was saddled with debt from a roughly half-a-million-dollar U.S. Department of Agriculture loan to upgrade its facility, and had costly flood insurance as well, according to township officials.
