VIDEO: This was an unforgettable snow day for a family in the Poconos. They had to think fast to save their dog from an icy pond.
Ollie the dog is wet, but recovering.
11-year-old Charlotte Kish is still recovering, too.
"It's never happened before, and it was just very scary," she says.
Around 10:30 Wednesday morning, Ollie was outside playing when he got stuck in the icy pond behind the family's house off Route 191 in Stroud Township. They frantically called 911, then turned to their kayak for help.
"I just thought if I could paddle out there, I could save him, like pull him up," Kish recalls.
With assistance from a neighbor, Charlotte's mom put on a life jacket and boarded the kayak. She made her way to Ollie, using the paddles to break up ice along the way. Finally, she managed to guide the dog toward land.
Ollie's body was halfway in the pond. He was in there for about 20 minutes, but the family says it felt like forever.
"And he was super cold. So we got his bed and we covered him in blankets," Kish adds.
Fire crews quickly responded but by the time they got there, Ollie was already back on land.
