A fire of unknown cause damaged buildings on West Washington Street Sunday.
Nana's Wash House at 37 W.t Washington St., and residential apartments at 39 W. Washington St. and 41 W. Washington St. were destroyed by flames and smoke damage. The Chambersburg Fire Department responded to a call of an apartment fire at 4:45 p.m. at 37 W. Washington St. The first engine arrived on the scene at 4:49 p.m, and flames were already spilling from a second-floor apartment and an extension into adjoining buildings, according to the Chambersburg Fire Department.
Additional units were quickly requested, as deteriorating conditions and hot, humid weather could affect extinguishing efforts. Firefighters searched both buildings and tried to fight flames from the inside but were pulled out for safety concerns. Flames were under control in about 30 minutes, but a third alarm was requested at 5:36 p.m. to ensure all hotspots were extinguished, according to the department.
