12-year-old boy injured in Vandergrift house fire

A 12-year-old boy was injured in a house fire in Vandergrift, Westmoreland County, on Wednesday afternoon. Officials said there were 11 people inside the home along Franklin Avenue when the fire broke out. There were seven children and four adults inside. Firefighters said the 12-year-old boy was trapped on the third floor and because of the smoke and flames, it was difficult for crews to get to him. He was flown by medical helicopter to a local hospital. His current condition is unknown at this time, however, firefighters said he was in serious condition when he was taken from the home. Firefighters also said the boy’s mother suffered burns trying to rescue him. The fire marshal is currently at the scene investigating. It is unclear at this time how the fire started.
