Erie firefighters spent several hours Tuesday evening, on the scene of a fire at a local funeral home.
Erie firefighters responded to the call just before 6:00 p.m. at the Burton Quinn Scott Cremation & Funeral Services at 10th and Cherry streets.
They arrived to find heavy fire coming from the chimney stack, which exits from the crematorium, as well as the roof area.
They got the fire out quickly, but spent about two hours making sure the fire was under control.
It appears to have started in the crematorium. Deputy Fire Chief Mike Fahey tells Erie News Now the crematorium had been in use on Tuesday.
Fahey says the fire was mainly on the outside of the building, and there appears to be very little damage inside, “The employees were just leaving for the day, they noticed some flames coming out of the very top of that (chimney stack from crematorium) which is unusual, so they called the fire department and it took off. Upon arrival, we had a pretty good fire going,” said Fahey.
