VIDEO: Crowds lined the roadway for miles Wednesday night to witness and honor the homecoming of a fallen community hero.
John “Gunny” Wilson served as commander of the American Legion Post 952, was a firefighter for Hookstown Volunteer Fire Department and a veteran. On Sunday, he was injured and later died after a motorcycle crash while he was on his way back home from out of state.
"There wasn't something (going on) with the community, that he wouldn't be involved in (or) help any possible way he could," said Dakon Moore, a fellow firefighter and friend of Wilson's. "(He'd) help anybody, anywhere, not just this community. (If) he found out somebody needed help, he was the guy that was there."
On Wednesday, Wilson was given a hero's escort back to Hookstown and honored with a 21-gun salute, as well as hundreds of American flags lining Rt. 168.
