Reading Fire Marshal encourages safe ways to cool down during week of heat

It’s a daring and dangerous leap to take. “Jumping off something that’s an elevated platform like that, you have no idea based on your trajectory if you’re gonna land in the deeper area, if you’re gonna land in the shallow area,” said Reading Fire Marshal Jeremy Searfoss. As this high heat week continues, some are seeking relief in the Schuylkill River. “If you don’t have the ability to swim you shouldn’t be in the river, if you do end up doing that wear some sort of flotation device because it has happened, we’ve had people drown in that river,” Searfoss said. And using a bridge platform as their personal diving board. “If you hit something and you’re unconscious and then you’re in the water that doesn’t bode well either. There are no safety guards in place for that. If you are injured you’re at the mercy of someone calling 911.”
