The state fire marshal is continuing to investigate the cause of a fire at a Beach Street home that is currently under construction on Monday afternoon, the second fire at the location over the past 3 months.
Westerly firefighters, police and ambulance personnel were called to the home at 52 Beach St. shortly before 2:15 p.m. with reports of smoke showing and a possible structure fire. Westerly Fire Chief John Mackay said it appeared a fire had started in the area of a second-floor porch before extending toward the building, which showed signs of construction.
The fire was reported quickly and it allowed firefighters to minimize the spread or impact to the home. The fire, which required venting of the building, caused damage to the home, although officials said it was not considered a loss.
