The state fire marshal's office is trying to determine what caused a basement to catch fire in Johnston Tuesday evening. According to Johnston Battalion Chief David Iannuccilli, crews responded to a home on Waterman Avenue around 5 p.m. and saw smoke coming from the basement of the home. "The homeowner said he heard some type of explosion and got out as fast as he could," Iannuccilli said. Everyone was able to escape safely and crews were able to confine the fire to the basement and extinguish it quickly. According to Iannucilli, the home sustained water damage in the basement. The building inspector said the home will need some trusses replaced, but the home is not considered a total loss. First responders transported one woman to the hospital at the scene, though Iannuccilli said she appeared to have an "anxiety issue" that was not directly related to the fire. The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the state fire marshal's office.
