Five residential high-rise apartment buildings managed by the Providence Housing Authority do not have sprinkler systems, but the agency says it is working to get them installed. On Tuesday, a kitchen fire broke out on the 10th floor of Parenti Villa, on Tobey Street, and the apartment’s occupant was taken to Rhode Island Hospital for smoke inhalation. Fire protection upgrades for Parenti Villa are scheduled to be put out to bid around spring of 2020, according to Providence Housing Authority Executive Director Melissa Sanzaro. The installation of a sprinkler system will take about another year to complete once the work is contracted. The Sister Dominica Manor on Atwells Avenue is in the process of having sprinklers installed, and work is nearly complete, Sanzaro said. Contractors just began installing a system at Hartford Park Tower on Hartford Avenue. Carol Towers also does not have a sprinkler system, and Dexter Manor, which includes two towers, has a sprinkler system in one of its towers that is outdated, Sanzaro said.
