Wednesday marked the 16th anniversary of the Station Nightclub fire.
For the first time in 16 years, no formal memorial service will be held in remembrance of those lost in the fire. However, friends and family of those killed, along with survivors, will still stop by the Station Fire Memorial Park throughout the day.
The park was built on the site of the old nightclub, and has since become a sanctuary for survivors and families of the victims. It was completed in May 2017, and dedicated to those impacted by the fire.
A federal tax incentive was introduced last year, allowing small business owners to deduct the cost of retrofitting their business with fire sprinklers, which the Station Nightclub didn't have.
A scholarship fund, called the "Station Nightclub Fire Children's Scholarship Fund," was created in 2005. It is awarded annually by the Rhode Island Foundation to help children of the victims and survivors pay for higher education or career training.
