A well-known art installation was destroyed in a fire early Monday morning, Providence City Councilman John Goncalves said in a statement.
"Like a Buoy, Like a Barrel," was installed in front of CIC Providence along Dyer Street last fall.
"While this is an active investigation, we don’t yet know the details of the cause of the fire," Goncalves said. "What I do know is this: our community will not stand for the destruction of public or private property. I am thankful that no one was hurt."
The 15-foot piece made of single-use plastics was created by New-York based artist Steven Siegel in 2019 and was meant to serve as a reminder of the dependence on single-use plastic and raise awareness about climate change.
“This is a big project with hundreds of people involved, including thousands of objects gathered,"
