The town council has given its blessing to the fire department to inspect a used pumper truck in Texas to replace the 1984 vehicle in its fleet. Although the two sides still are negotiating, Deputy Chief Howie Tighe said the 2013 Pierce Impel pumper, which has roughly 65,000 miles on it, would cost about $265,000. Voters unanimously passed a warrant in June that authorized the department to borrow up to $350,000 for the truck. “It wouldn’t be the first time that we purchased used fire trucks for this department,” Tighe said. “And it probably won’t be the last.” According to Fire Chief Jim Bryer, the department began looking at used pumpers because trucks directly from a manufacturer “were a lot more expensive than we initially thought.”
