Smoke filled the skies over Narragansett Bay Thursday night as firefighters from around the state battled a fire that destroyed three homes on Prudence Island.
Portsmouth fire received the call around 11 p.m. and flames could be seen as far as Bristol.
According to Assistant Fire Chief Howard Tighe, everyone on duty jumped into their new fireboat and were able to make it to the island in about five minutes where they met volunteer fire crews on the island.
The fire started at 14 Herreshoff Lane and quickly spread to 15 Herreshoff Lane and 830 Narraganset Ave. The fire also spread to the exterior of two other homes which were damaged on the outside, but are salvageable.
Two of the three homes are summer homes.
Tighe says there are no fire hydrants on the island, but with the help from Bristol fire crews and their new fireboat, they were able to pump seawater to the connected houses.
