In response to the lead story in The Providence Journal on May 28, “Cause of blaze remains mystery” by Katherine Gregg, I would like to comment about this serious issue. There is a need to increase the level of fire safety in these older structures which are grandfathered from some of the current building and fire codes. Many fires of this type occur in the daytime when most occupants are alert and escape safely. Someday the inevitable will happen and in the middle of the night an older occupied building will go up in flames, with the loss of many lives. Most of these timber-framed housing units are only equipped with smoke detectors and fire alarm systems. First responders place their lives at risk when responding to these types of fires.
