The Red Cross said 17 people were displaced from their apartments Saturday when fire broke out in a multifamily home in Pawtucket. Crews braved the hot conditions as they battled a three-alarm fire on Warren Avenue.
Flames spread from the second floor porch to the attic and the roof. Three dogs and two reptile pets were rescued from the home. "We're weighed down with heavy clothes, insulated, we're already building heat before we even start work," said Battalion Chief Dave Cairrao. "And then you add the heated environment. It's important that we take breaks, get rehabbed and stay hydrated."
The Red Cross said it was helping 11 adults and six children from four families.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
