A woman was hospitalized after being hit by a bus in Kennedy Plaza in Providence. Shortly after 5:30 PM on Friday, police responded to Exchange Terrace at Kennedy Plaza for a report of a pedestrian being struck. Upon arrival, police said they found the female victim lying in the street next to a curb being tended to by Providence Fire personnel; she was transported by rescue to Rhode Island Hospital.
Police met with the driver of the Gillig Corp Transit Bus, who said he was making a turn at the green light from Exchange Street to Exchange Terrace, at which time he said the crosswalk appeared to be clear. According to the police report, the driver said by the time he saw the woman — due to a “blind spot” in the bus — it was too late, and the front of the bus struck the victim.
Police are currently investigating.
