Wednesday marked 23 years since the 9/11 terror attacks.
Remembrance ceremonies were held across Southern New England.
It was a somber morning outside of Rhode Island State Police headquarters.
Gov. Dan McKee and the families of those who lost a loved one 23 years ago gathered.
Taps was played, and a bell was rung representing the four planes that crashed after being hijacked by al-Qaida terrorists.
Nine Rhode Islanders lost their lives in the attacks. In total, close to 3,000 people were killed.
Shawn Nassaney, a 25-year-old Bryant University graduate and track star from Pawtucket, was on American Airlines Flight 175, which crashed into the World Trade Center’s South Tower in New York City. His girlfriend was also on board.
Nassaney's father, Patrick, said he attends the ceremony each year.
