Last month Columbia Fire and Rescue dispatched a swift water rescue crew to the waters of the Duck River near Riverside Drive after a man’s kayak capsized after being trapped in branches in the fast moving water. The Daily Herald reported on March 14 that Columbia resident Quivarus Armstrong, 30, was paddling along the river with his brothers early Saturday morning, when he suddenly found himself being swept up by the current. After losing control in the current, the kayak hit a nearby log and Armstrong was plunged into the water. “I thought I could get it, but I couldn’t get it,” Armstrong said. “I’ve come out here before, but this time it just wasn’t in my favor. My brothers had already gone across, but when I went out I wasn’t really moving. I tried to turn to go with the current, but by the time I did there was a big log right there, and the kayak hit it and I capsized.”
