A new American flag was run up the most visible flagpole in Elizabethton on Monday to commemorate Memorial Day. The flagpole at the western entrance to downtown was erected by local contractor J.I. Cornett in 1992 in remembrance of the service performed during Desert Storm by Elizabethton’s National Guard unit, the 776th Maintenance Company. A large garrison flag flew from the flagpole for many years and was supplied and maintained by downtown upholsterer Bob Cable. The Elizabethton Fire Department has the responsibility of raising the flags. For Memorial Day, the firefighters received assistance from several veterans who served in wars from World War II to Iraq.
