Chattanooga fire officials say a small fire at Parkridge Medical Center was caused by a patient attempting to smoke a cigarette on Thursday night. It happened shortly after 9:30 p.m. at the location in the 2300 block of McCallie Avenue. CFD spokesperson Lindsey Rogers says a small fire broke out on the second floor of the hospital when a patient tried to light a cigarette and caught her bed on fire. Rogers says the fire was out before firefighters arrived at the scene but smoke was visible as a result. Rogers says firefighters originally had patients shelter in place in their rooms as they worked to clear the smoke and stop the sprinklers. Rogers says the patient who caused the fire is being treated for burns and the other patients have been moved to another area of the hospital. Fire crews are currently working to control water damage.
