VIDEO: The City of Midland's fire department says its change of its scheduling policy has helped with recruitment during Midland's boom in recent years. Back in 2016, after a one-year trial run, the Midland Fire Department officially adapted to a 48, 96 schedule. A schedule that has first responders working for 48 hours and then taking 96 hours off for a continuous 6-day rotation. Before this change, firefighters worked a "Kelly" schedule requiring them to work 24 hours on, 24 hours off, for three shifts followed by 4 days off. Firefighters say the 48, 96 schedule has helped with firefighter recruitment in surrounding areas. As firefighters in need of jobs who may not want to pay Midland housing prices can comfortably commute back and forth from their home within the 4 days off they have.
