VIDEO: There are those who get paid to risk their lives to fight fires, but also those who volunteer to do it for free. Jeremy Profitt has been a volunteer firefighter for 23 years, and spent the last 5 of those in Andrews. Profitt responds to every call the Andrews Volunteer Fire Department receives. "I work at a facility outside of town here and thankfully my employer is very generous with the volunteer fire department and we respond from work." said Profitt. Not every volunteer firefighter has an understanding employer though. “Volunteer Fireman are always in fear of maybe being disciplined for responding on calls.” Over 70 percent of the fire departments in Texas are volunteer departments, yet no law protects these volunteers’ jobs while they protect our communities.
