Now that its fire services contract with Logan is on the negotiating table for the first time in decades, Providence is considering whether or not to continue to rely on the larger city. Providence Mayor John Drew said it must consider “all options” since Logan announced back in November its 12-month intent to renegotiate the contract and told Providence that it owed the city nearly 40 percent more than in previous years. “As a city, we couldn’t just pull the plug and say, ‘Next month we have different plans,’” Drew said. “We’re going to have to make a decision.” According to a November letter by then-Logan Mayor Craig Petersen to then-Providence Mayor Don Calderwood, there was no record that the contract has been updated since its inception in 1993.
