This is the second in a four-part series detailing the discoveries of Giles accompanying the Lehi Fire Department and its new recruits. Much of the training during the second week of the New Recruits Training Camp was all about height. If a firefighter suffers from acrophobia, that will be overcome quickly. There is more to using a ladder in an emergency than simply setting it up and climbing. The recruits worked on ladder training and drills for several hours. “We want them to do it safely, first of all,” said Capt. Rob Stanley. “We drill to make them efficient and quick.” A good climbing angle, locking into place, how to climb while carrying a second ladder, helping someone out of a window and how to get on and off of a roof safely are some of the practices that the recruits learned.
