VIDEO: Firefighters Friday evening worked to put out a blaze that started in the basement of a vacant building. The fire started in the building at 942 S. 200 West, Salt Lake firefighters said. It appeared to be an attic fire but as smoke billowed from the basement, crews took a defensive approach and fought the fire from outside the building, Salt Lake Fire Capt. Tony Stowe said. "We are defensive because we don't trust the integrity of the structure," he said. Firefighters Friday evening did not know exactly when the fire started or what caused it. It was extinguished within about two hours. While crews worked at the scene, Utah Transit Authority TRAX rails were blocked at 900 South and a bus bridge was established.
