As rescuers raced to Bountiful Pond to free a man and his dog trapped under the ice on Thursday evening, a passerby burst into action. By the time members of the South Davis Metro Fire Department arrived, the man and his dog were already free, Chief Jeff Bassett told 2News. Bassett said the man was riding his bike near the pond, with his dog running next to him, when the dog broke free of its leash to chase after some ducks. The dog fell into the bond and became trapped under the ice. When the man tried to pull his dog out, he, too became trapped, Bassett said. A passerby noticed the pair in distress and found some rope to throw to the man. He grabbed on and was pulled to safety. Bassett said the dog was able to get out on his own. The cyclist was put in an ambulance to get warmed up, but had no injuries, the fire chief said.
