Jimmy Lewis was not at home early Friday morning when the single-story white wooden structure in which he lived caught fire. Heavy flames were showing when firefighters from six area fire departments arrived at 3092 Kerns Mill Road in Halifax County near the Pittsylvania County line. According to Ringgold Volunteer Fire Department Chief Mike Neal, late Thursday night Pittsylvania County E-911 dispatched his department along with Laurel Grove Volunteer Fire Department to a woods fire on Kerns Church Road, but soon the call was upgraded to a structure fire on Kerns Mill Road in Sutherlin. “Heavy fire was showing,” Neal said when Ringgold firefighters arrived at the house. “The house sits off the road, so only two trucks were able to get to the structure, and then waterlines were laid back to the road.” .0
