A Caroline County deputy is being honored with a Life Saving Award for pulling a woman from a burning house this week. Deputy Mark O’Connor was the first to arrive at 10288 Moncure Drive in Ruther Glen after a fire was reported around 6:15 Tuesday morning, according to a news release from Sheriff Tony Lippa. Despite seeing 8-foot flames coming from the center of the roof line, O’Connor entered the burning house to search for any occupants. He searched the house room by room through heavy smoke and smoldering debris until he found a woman asleep in her bed and helped her exit the house, Lippa said. Fire and Rescue units from Ladysmith, Bowling Green,Upper Caroline and Frog Level volunteer fire departments were dispatched to put out the fire with additional help from Hanover County.
