The Charlottesville Fire Department wants to make sure homes in one neighborhood are prepared in case of a fire. Officials will be visiting the Tenth and Page street neighborhood on June 14 and 15 as part of a Home Fire Safety Canvas. During the canvas, they will speak with residents on being prepared for a home fire emergency and check for working smoke alarms in homes. Firefighters will also install new smoke alarms in homes where they are needed or set scheduled times to return to homes to install one, for free. The National Fire Protection Association says almost two-thirds of home fire deaths last year occurred in properties where there were no working smoke alarms. For those places where no one is home during the canvas, a tag will be hung on the door with information on how to get a free smoke alarm and a home safety checklist to help residents with their home safety planning.
