Students at Appomattox County High School are learning the ropes of being an emergency first responder through the Future First Responders club. The club is primarily conducted by the Appomattox Volunteer Fire Department (AVFD) but receives assistance from other departments as well, including the Appomattox County Rescue Squad. Jonathan Garrett, AVFD fire chief, said the club began its training class at the beginning of February and filled up within the first week. Right now there are 15 students involved from 9th through 12th grades. The club must maintain a 5-1 student-to-teacher ratio. There’s more to this story in the Times Virginian newspaper.
