A skidder valued at $300,000 was declared a total loss following a Saturday morning equipment fire that occurred on Rabat Road in Nathalie. According to Liberty Volunteer Fire Department Chief Jeff Brown, the fire was reported at 11:35 a.m., a short time after the skidder’s owner, Pro Logging of Altavista in Campbell County, had left the logging site. “It was an apparent equipment failure that caused the fire that broke out after it had been operating earlier that morning at the logging site,” Brown said. Firefighters from Liberty Volunteer Fire Department, North Halifax Volunteer Fire Department and Brookneal Volunteer Fire Department were able to contain the blaze to the skidder, Brown said. A total of 10 Liberty firefighters on three trucks were assisted by nine firefighters from North Halifax on three trucks and four firefighters from Brookneal on one truck. Firefighters remained on the scene for more than two hours.
