A veteran firefighter who served the city for more than 40 years is joining the School Board.
Michael Mullins was appointed to an open seat on the board on Tuesday, beating out Jessica Owens, who works for the state's Social Services Department, and Seko Varner, who runs an entertainment firm. Mullins will represent the Rose Hall District until a special election is held in November.
The board vote was 9-0, with Dorothy Holtz absent. Mullins will be sworn in before the group's next meeting May 28.
"Looking forward to going to work," Mullins said after the vote.
The seat had been empty for more than a month. Joel McDonald served Rose Hall from 2013 until this spring when it came to light that he had lived outside of his district for about 18 months. A judge ruled that McDonald vacated the seat when he moved.
