While heading to help one capsized kayaker on Saturday, Grayson County first responders ended up rescuing and removing a number of people along the New River.
The Independence Volunteer Fire Department says crews were dispatched to the Duck Roost area of the New River on Saturday, Aug. 8, for a report of a capsized kayak. By the time crews arrived, though, the department says the kayaker already made it to a rock bluff on the bank.
However, according to fire officials, while en route to assist the first kayaker, first responders ended up removing three more people from separate groups who flipped their kayaks. The department says one person ended up with his arm trapped in an eddy, but he was removed by Conservation Police Officers with the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources.
Due to the number of rescues, crews were reportedly on scene for three hours.
