The city of Yakima will be held responsible for $157,227.68 worth of firefighting costs related to a fire started by Yakima SWAT team members nearly one year ago, authorities say. The state Attorney General's Office recently notified the city that it would be required to pay for fire suppression costs because it was caused by the negligence of two Yakima police officers. According to a letter from Assistant Attorney General for the Natural Resources Division Paul James to the Seattle law firm representing the Yakima Police Department, state law provides for the recovery of "reasonable expenses in fighting the fire together with costs of investigation and litigation including reasonable attorneys' fees" from any person whose "negligence" is responsible for starting a fire on forest land.
